Asbru’s Execution Engine: Utilizing Guidelines for Artificial Ventilation of Newborn Infants
نویسندگان
چکیده
In real-world environments of neonatal intensive care units (NICUs), a major challenge in using clinical guidelines and protocols in a computer readable form is to provide (i) a clear, precise representation to handle the complex forms of uncertainty and timecritical situations which are common in the ICU domain and (ii) an execution engine to be able to tackle such a representation. This paper presents an execution unit tailored to a particular guideline-representation language called Asbru. Asbru is able to capture the required features to proceed with guideline-based care within NICUs. We have evaluated our execution engine by modelling the artificial ventilation of newborn infants in Asbru and by applying our execution engine to real patient data and Asbru plans.

Knowledge-based verification of clinical guidelines by detection of anomalies
As shown in numerous studies, a significant part of published clinical guidelines is tainted with different types of semantical errors that interfere with their practical application. The adaptation of generic guidelines, necessitated by circumstances such as resource limitations within the applying organization or unexpected events arising in the course of patient care, further promotes the in...
متن کاملInvestigation of oxygenation in premature infants under mechanical ventilation in supine position compare to side lying
Abstract Introduction: Changing position is an important aspect within nursing care. Prone positioning amongst premature infants could improve their oxygenation compared to supine position. Side lying position leads to developed support between premature infants, however there is few studies about effects of this position on premature infants 'oxygenation. Objective: This study was conduc...

متن کاملNew guidelines for newborn resuscitation.
UNLABELLED The new guidelines from the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation and American Heart Association/American Academy of Pediatrics for newborn resuscitation underline that efficient ventilation is the key to a successful resuscitation of the newly born infant. Compared with the former guidelines published in 1999, the major changes are (i) less emphasis on using supplemental ...
متن کاملOxygen cost of breathing and weaning process in newborn infants.
Newborn infants may have a high oxygen cost of breathing (OCB) at the time of being weaned from mechanical ventilation. We hypothesized that this increase in oxygen consumption (V'O2) could be reduced by using certain weaning ventilatory modes. We designed a study to assess V'O2 during three weaning ventilatory modes: patient triggered ventilation, synchronous intermittent mandatory ventilation...
